Goal setting is an important skill for any professional to master, and it’s a cornerstone topic in our H3 Concepts Inc. training program. Having goals gives people structure and keeps them looking ahead for opportunities that will help them accomplish their objectives.
No matter what goals are called – objectives, targets, ambitions, action plans, etc. – there are some basic guidelines they should follow to increase the likelihood they will be achieved. Writing them down is an essential first step, after which we like to filter them through the SMART acronym. This stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-sensitive.
The H3 Concepts Inc. goal-setting procedure looks like this: if we want to make more money next year than we did this year, we write that down. Then, we start applying SMART principles to that idea by asking ourselves some questions. How much more money? By when? Why is this important to me? Is it possible to increase my income by this much?
Instead of a vague desire to have more money, what we’ll end up with will be something like I will increase next year’s annual income by 15 percent over this year’s income by December 31, 2019 because when I do I’ll be able to afford a new car. After stating our objective, we can start working backward from December 31, 2019 to today on a calendar and determine what we need to do each day to move us closer to the achievement of our SMART goal.
One of the main motivators for any professional is the feeling that they are succeeding, and clearly defined goals help keep that feeling alive. Learn more about our success strategies by following H3 Concepts Inc. on Twitter
